Presented by the Iowa Civil War Site
Letter number forty-one
Memphis, Tn August 25, 1864
Dear Friends, I thought I'd drop you a few lines this morning to let you know
that the raiders did not get me. But they could of had me just as easy as not
for I had no chance of escape. We have two guard houses at the Gayoso. The
rebs entered one and took 3 of the boys with them but as luck would have it
they did not find us and it was more luck than anything else. Those papers
doesn't state all of the particulars that was in the Monday morning paper,
but probably it will be more satisfactory to you than the news you will get.
The guard that was shot at the door of our hospital is a getting along very
well. This morning one of the guards that was taken prisoner from our
hospital wrote a few lines to us. We got it yesterday. He told us to take
care of his things and write to his Mother where he was and how he was taken.
We had a big scare day before yesterday as you will see in the paper. It
caused the greatest excitement that I ever experienced. I was on guard at the
front door of the hospital. At the time I had shared work to keep some of the
citizens out of the hospital. Our hospital raised a co of about 75 men and
joined Co D of the 8th Iowa. I had a good gun. I think that if the Johnny's
had come I could of picked off some of them. The last that I heard from our
regt they was expecting a fight. I got a letter from Sate day before
yesterday. I hope that you have the box and money before now. Good morning.
from F.W.Kimble to his home.
