Letter number thirty-eight

Dear Sister Eliza, I thank you for being so kind as to write all the news. I
am sorrow that you had nothing to amuse you the 4th. I shouldn't wonder if
you didn't have the best time. There is nothing wrong about that, for you had
the best time last 4th. So turn about is not more than right. Eliza you say
that the Copperheads at Portland eat on a __? and the Abolishioners at
Stumptown eat on the ground. Now I will tell you the reason of the
Stumptowners eating on the ground and it is this. The Abolishioners think
themselves any better than our soldiers that is in the field sleeping on the
ground and using the ground for our table. So you see Mr. Abe sympathizes
with the poor soldiers, while on the other side we are scorned and made fun
of as if brutes. But never mind. Some of us will stand the storm and live to
get home yet and then it will be "look out copperheads" for the year of
Julbilee has come. You say E.R. saluted Ma_? and called her Mother. That was
perfectly right in E.R. for she is Mother. Was E.R. at Stumptown the 4th and
if she was, how did she carry herself . When you see her again please tell
her that F.W. Kimble seen her brother James July the 11th and he was well as
usual. He is the fattest that I ever seen him. He is boys cook at the Overton
Hospital. Eliza I signed the payroll day before yesterday for 6 months pay. I
haven't any objections how soon it makes its appearance although I don't
need money but I would like to have it very well. Eliza I am getting along
very well at present. I have all the wine that I want to drink.. I expect
that is what is fattening me up so fast. I am as full in the face as I ever
was at any time at home and probably fuller. I feel sory for Mary Kirkham. It
appears that she has poor luck on all sides. I hope that she may recover yet.
Well Eliza I must tell you the fun when I was on Red River. I got a letter
from Miss Kirk and I was so sick at the time that I did not answer it and
after I got better I kept putting it off until yesterday. I took a notion to
answer it so I did. I told her that I had just received her letter and was
very glad to hear from her and so forth. I will soon get an answer if she
don't take the hint and I guess that she won't. Well Eliza I must stop pretty
soon or you will get tired of reading. You will please excuse all mistakes
and poor writing. I can't write worth a hoot today. Give my compliments to
Jimmy. Tell Bib that I'm right side up with care. That is if she makes any
inquiries about me. Well sister I certainly must close as I haven't but a few
moments to write. So you will have to excuse my short letter and I will try
and do better next time. So no more this time from your brother. Francis
Kimble to Eliza Kimble.
