Letter number seven
Camp Heron, Davenport, Iowa February 24, 1862
Miss E.E.Kimble
I take this present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know
that I am well at present and hope that those few lines may find you enjoying
the same blessing. Well, Eliza we do have some of the greatest times in camp.
Some of the boys has a violin which affords us sufficient music for our
company for dancing. We have a dance most every night. For our ladies several
boys with his hat off. That is the way we tell the ladies from the gentlemen.
We publish a paper every week which is read every Saturday evening. Liza it
looks very odd to see 100 men a setting listening to the paper read. It makes
me think that they ought to be in their homes. I have sat and wondered if
this war is close or not. Well Liza there has been two of our company out of
the army. They ran away and enlisted and their fathers came after them a few
days since and took them out of the army. We have not got our pay yet. Some
of the boys that enlisted since I did got their bounty and are now on a
furlough. We expect our pay in a few days and a furlough of a few days. I
want to know what regt. S. Nelson is in. Liza I think you and Mother write
very short letters. I was to church Sunday evening. There was about one
hundred and fifty soldiers there. I have had one letter from Mary Louis some
time since. Well I think that I have wrote all the news so good bye for the
present. I must go to my supper. I bought this book for a present.
(I get from this letter he may be a little home sick.)
