14th Iowa Infantry, Company 'B'

Presented by the Iowa Civil War Site

Letter number forty-three

October 6, 1864 Letter to Eliza
We left our camp on the river the 2nd day of Oct. We was 3 days coming this
far. I believe it is called forty miles to St. Louis. I expect we will have a
long march for it is thought we will go to Jefferson City in this state.
Price is conscripting every man he can catch. It is thought by some that
Price is going to make a raid in the southern part of Iowa. I hope he won't
He can do it if he trys for his men is nearly all mounted man and they can go
two miles to our one, but he may not go so far into the north for fear of
being captured and he may find a place to fight and wait until we come up to
him so he can fight us on his own ground. He has more men than Smith has but
we have the most artillery and that is what the rebs can't stand. Mother I
hope you won't be uneasy about me for I will take care of myself if anybody
does. We are having a fine rest in camp now but I expect that we will have to
march bright and early in the morning. We expected to march this morning but
did not. We left everything behind. Only just what we could get along with.
The third brigade of our division had quite a sharp fight with about 3
thousand of the rebs about 3 miles from here and whipped them nicely. The
fight was 4 or 5 day ago. Eliza, Lieutenant Thomson of Co. D is wounded and
taken prisoner. His photograph is in the album. He refuses to be paroled
unless the rebs will parole the privates of the 14th Iowa. Our camp is close
to a big orchard so we have a plenty of apples to eat and cook. Well I expect
I must close for this time. You will please write soon and give me all of the
particulars and direct as I told you in my last, so Good Day. Give my regards
to Mother and the rest of the folks Eliza. Yours as ever. F.W. Kimble. P.S.
W.J. Coor (or Poor)sends his regards to you. He is here while I am writing.
You won't look for another until you get it for I may not have an opportunity
to write soon.
