You may find information in Wapello county records. I know that my ancestors, who were in Company E, hailed from Wapello county. I found some info in the "History of Wapello County" - two volumes. Hope that helps!

I don't have information about your ancestor. However, Captain Avery originally enlisted in the 38th Regiment, as a lieutenant, in November 1862 at Dubuque. He was promoted to Captain about March 1863 while the 38th was on garrison duty at New Madrid, MO. He retained his captaincy when the 34th and 38th were consolidated in January 1865, and served as captain of Company I until mustered out on August 15 1865. If you are interested, I have a letter written by the Captain dated September 2, 1863. He describes some of the suffering the men endured during the summer of 1863.
