I have origina Civil War discharge papers of my great great grandfather. His name was John W. McCorkle and he was a private. He was from Marion County, Iowa and enlisted in what appears to be Company J or I of the 34th Iowa Infantry (Captain Avery's Company) in 1863. Written on the paper in what I believe is his handwriting are the names of two battles - the seige of Spanish Fort and Jenkins Ferry. He was discharged 15, August 1865 at Houston, Texas. The discharge paper states that he was born in Putnam County, Indiana & "is eighteen years of age". The paper is signed by Capt. Avery and by J (?) Stewart (commanding the regiment). If anyone has any information that would help me learn more about him I would greatly appreciate your help.
