I am searching for information concerning a member of my wife's family, a Joseph Bowker from Newton, Iowa. In a letter written to my wife's great grandfather in England in 1874, he mentioned having served three years for the Union, and that he fought in "13 general engagements." So far, I have found no mention of him in any unit rosters I have reviewed, but have only reviewed what I have found on-line. That is fairly limited.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me as to where to continue my search? I am a novice at this sort of thing. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I live near Grand Rapids, Michigan. I would be looking for resource materials I can order, or information on where I must go in Iowa to examine such material. Obviously, I want to thoroughly plan any such trip.
