The Knights of the Golden Circle and "Copperheads" were the same thing, although the term "Copperhead" eventually came to be used for anyone against the war. Interesting you should mention Madison County, as I was just reading a letter from a member of the 23rd Iowa who mentioned in September 1862 that a detachment of that regiment had gone to Winterset and arrested seven members of the KGC there. For reading material on the subject, you might try "Iowa and the Copperhead Movement", which might be in your local library or interlibrary loan.
