There is a brief reference to the Knights of the Golden Circle in a letter written by my great great grandmother, Aug 7th, 1864 from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. "The Copperheads don't say much, but I guess they are doing all they can secretly. There is a good deal of talk of the Knights of the Golden Circle having meetings all over the State. I guess they are plotting some mischief."

During that time there was great concern in southern Iowa that the guerillas from Missouri might cross into Iowa. My g g grandmother mentioned this in the same letter, so there may have been some fear that the Knights of the Golden Circle were connected to the Missouri guerillas.
