I ran across an old obituary from Madison County, Iowa, describing an M.W. "Wes" Beem as an anti-war Democrat and as a member of the Golden Circle during the Civil War. After the war he moved to Kansas; just before he died in 1902 he directed his wife "to burn up an immense batch of old letters that had been kept under lock in a trunk. Mrs. Beem did the bidding of her husband. Those wartime letters would have made up volumes of the secret history of the Golden Circle, also names of its members in the United States..." I take it that the Golden Circle was some kind of "Copperhead" organization. Does anyone know more about it? Is there a history of it?
