But its conflicting. You posted that Robert C. Watson was wounded and died in the soldiers and orphans home in Davenport in 1867. Well I went and looked him up in the seven volume (7000+ pages) set of the "Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion" published in 1910. This volume lists each person that served from Iowa alphabetically by company and Regiment. I did find him in the 8th Iowa Infantry, Company C. It stated: Watson, Robert O. Age 37. Residence Ainsworth, Nativity Indiana. Enlisted Aug. 30, 1862. Mustered Aug. 30, 1862. Died May 23, 1864, Davenport, Iowa. Burried in National Cemetary, Rock Island, Ill. Now this was the only Robert Watson out of the 1027 men that served in the 8th Iowa, so I assume that this is the man that we are looking for. The middle initials are different, but back then writing wasn't as clear as it is today, and things were often misread. That could be the reason behind this error. The other difference that I am looking at is the date of death. 1867-1865? The place of death is right....Davenport. Now I looked at the Rock Island Natoinal Cemetaries Web page on the net here and it lists the Confederate dead burried there, and not the Union, so we struck out there. This is their web site address below: https://www.outfitters.com/illinois/history/civil/riarsenal.html Now on to a listing of the battles that he was in....or should I say the 8th IA Inf. was involved in from the time that he was mustered in until the end. This list is taken out of Steve Meyers book Iowa Valor. An excellent source of info and letters on Iowa's participation in the war. Published in 1994. ISBN 0-9630284-3-X 1862 Oct. 3-4 Battle of Corinth, MS Oct. 5-12 Pursuit to Hatchie River, MS 1863 May 13 Action at Mississippi Springs, MS May 14 Engagement, Jackson, MS May 18-July 4 Siege of Vicksburg, MS May 19 Assult on Vicksburg, MS May 22 Assult on Vicksburg, MS May 26-June 4 Expedition from Haines' Bluff to Mechanicsburg, MS July 5-10 Advance on Jackson, MS July 10-16 Siege of Jackson, MS Oct. 14-20 Expedition from Messenger's Ferry, Big Black River, toward Canton, MS Oct. 17 Action at Bouge Chitto Creek, MS 1864 Feb.3- March 2 Expedition from Vicksburg to Meridan (Sherman's), MS April 9 Engagemnet at Pleasant Hill, LA May 23 *** This is where the Iowa records record Robert dying *** Aug. 21 Engagement at Memphis (with Forest), TN Sept. 26-27 Skirmishes, Pulaski, TN 1865 March 17- Apr. 12 campaign against Mobile, AL That is about all the information I have right now.....Have you thought about trying the National Archives to get a copy of his military papers and pension papers? Its well worth it. I found out so much about my relatives this way. Check out this site if you are interested in that. https://iowa-counties.com/civilwar/index.shtml Best of luck with your research. never give up. I am still finding information on my relatives in the war in the least likely of places. If you need anything else, please let me know.
