The Knights of the Golden Circle were indeed up to some mischief in August of 1864. Although in February of 1864 they changed their name to the Order of the Sons of Liberty. Their grand scheme was to attack several Union prisons thus freeing thousands of Cenfederate prisoners, arm them and then go to Missouri where Jefferson Davis had pledged in upwards of 20,000 troops to join them. Their purpose was to draw much of the eastern army away from Virginia and R.E. Lee. They di utilize many of the guerilla groups to promote their plan as the Confederate government paid the SOL 10% of all property damage to the US government. [email protected]
