I was told my ancestor was a scout and spy in the 1st Iowa Infantry and fought in the Battle of Wilson's Creek. His name was James G. Wilson and his friend, also a scout and spy, was Tom Kelly. I can't find their names in the roster lists. Could scouts and spies be listed in a secret list that I'm not aware of? I was told that James turned a report to the General placing the Rebel forces. Is there a way to find more info on these two people? I sent away to the National Archives requesting Wilson's military record. No word yet. That was almost two months ago. I would appreciate ANY suggestions.

I am looking for any information concerning the 1st Iowa Cavalry, Co. E. I have my great-great grandfathers discharge papers in 1866 from this unit. I am searching for information on my great grandfather: James A. Riley of Marion, Linn County, Iowa. He was born 13 Jan 1844 and died 21 Aug 1901 in Topeka KS. Any information would be deeply appreciated.
