Co. D, 18th Regiment, Iowa Infantry

I have been researching an ancestor who served the state of Iowa in the Civil War. He is listed as enlisting in Co.D, 18th Regiment, Iowa infantry. I have not been able to find anything on him or this unit. Is there a difference in how the units are listed, i.e. Co.D, 18th Regiment, Iowa Infantry, and the 18th Iowa Infantry? If so, does anyone have any information on the Co.D, 18th Regiment, Iowa Infantry unit? His name was Elihu Wakefield, place of enlistment Dardenelle, Ark., enllisting officer Capt. Ray, date of enlistment Oct. 17, 1863. He fought at the battles of Prairie De Ann, Moscow, and Poison Springs where he was taken prisoner. From there he was sent to the Conf. POW camp (Camp Ford) at Tyler Texas where he died and was buried. I also have a GAR medal, but between the crossed cannons at the top, and the star at the bottom, there is another medal of a silver eagle on black background. Does anyone know what the silver eagle on the black background is? Thanks for any information. Don Hiltabidle
