38th Vol. Inf.  -  History, Pictures, Letters??

I am looking for any histories written about the 38th Iowa and also the 34th Iowa for the period after they were combined. Some postings here reveal info about actions by individual companies, but I have found no such info. in the official records (120 volumes) published for the war nor in the six volumes by the state of Iowa with the rosters and regimental histories. If anyone could tell me the source for the info it would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'm looking for any letters or pictures of men in the 38th. This is for a project of writing a history and/or article about the unit for publication. My ggg grandfather Josiah C. Smith served in the unit for its entire service, and I have a picture of him in uniform which I plan to use, but I would like others as well and also letters to make the lives of the men come to life. Thank you for additional information re: the 38th Iowa Infantry. I am now researching information for a book I want to write about my ancestor. Can you give me your source of information about the 38th? Do you know where I can find information about the hospital at Carrollton, LA? I have discovered that is where he died, later being buried as an unknown in Chalmette National Cem. outside of New Orleans.
