Nov 21st A.D. 1861
Dear Sister
In answer to your kind
letter received yesterday I will write you a few lines I am very well
indeed and in fine spirits On board the DesMoines City bound for St Louis
Mo it is now nearly 4 PM and we will pass Quincy between 5 & 6 this
afternoon we have landed but once since we left Davenport yesterday at 5
oclock if we should stop at Quincy I will run up town a few minutes
trusting to meet some of you My little Family are all well or was two days
since our Company is in good health and a model Company It is 101 men all
marred and quite a number of praying men I have got a part of my uniform
Coat Pants vest Cap Sword Sash and Belt It will cost me $150.00 to fit me
out for the field and my pay up to this timw is $166.00 Sixty six I have
recieved. there is some seven hundred of our Regiment on board and the
remainder will be in another boat to night it is said to be the best
Regiment that has left town as yet. Our destination for the present is
Benton Barracks St Louis Mo from there unknown and it matters not to me. I
we stay there a few weeks I think that some of you could come to see me if
you are any ways ???

It is now half past four oclock and we are pressing Canton Mo and the Boat
with the remainder of our Reg is coming now in sight. I am well pleased
with camp life being one of the Lieutenants I have great many privileges
that the privated are deprived of I am gaining in flesh and am stouter that
I ahve been for three years the officers have cabtin pasage and fine living
the boys have a plenty to eat but have to cook it and are on deck and in
covered barges

Now Sister you must answer this letter and all others from me and Sett
immediately When you write to me direct just as I say (E.D. Duncan Benton
Barracks St Louis Mo in care of Captain Miller Com. B. 13 Reg Iowa
Volunteers) and they will follow me if I am moved away from their

Give my love to Father and Mother and all the rest of the famly and
inquiring friends
