Greencastle Iowa Sept 22 A.D. 1861

Dear Sis in view of that pulling of hair I thought I would try and
see if I could write you a few lines, we are all well and have a plenty of
the nesarys of life. (he later added "ces" to make necessarys of life.) Mr
Ashton got here last night about nine oclock he got his supper and fed
horses and then went home he had a few ??? ahead and was in a fine humor
we received the fruit Father sent us and was very thankful for it and Mr.
Ashton left us a 1/2 Bushel of green apples and we had quite a feast this
morning which brought to mind by gone times The pictures you sent me were
glad to see I think Selly looks more natural than you do and bessie has
grown so I would not have known him I was very sorry to hear of the ill
health of Uncle James family. Tell Lizzie that I would like to see her at
her new home and would like to show boys with her her boy is pretty and I
think mine is he has a fine forehead with a fine promanent black eye he
wears pants now and thinks he is quite a man. Well Sis I have nothing of
interest to write to you. we hear nothing but hard times and war There is a
call for four thousand more men from Iowa and Dow talks of going and I say
if he goes I will go to I believe he thinks he has a call to fight. Well
Sis I will look for you in the Spring or as soon asa we hear you are married
and I want you to be shure and come and tell Father and Mother to come.

Tell John and Mary I would like to see them and would be mutch pleased to
have them come and pay us a visit
Give our love to all the family and friends and be shure and write soon So
good bye
Sett

young ones and if him and Selly wil come I will ensure them a turkey roast

school with Millie

necessary for men to leave their familys there is talk of Drafting men in
Iowa and I will not stand a draft
I hold my God first then my family then my country my love to all write
