CROCKER'S IOWA BRIGADE
Celebrating Their Fiftieth Anniversary in Sigourney Today
and Tomorrow

The survivors of Crocker's Iowa Brigade are celebrating their semi centennial in Sigourney today and tomorrow. It is fitting that this celebration be celebrated here. This was the home of General Crocker and the survivors of that celebrated brigade are here in goodly numbers.

There were 6289 men served in this brigade and of that number 4773 lost their lives on the field of battle.
The brigade was made up as follows:
The 11th Iowa 1297 men
The 13th Iowa 1788 men
The 15th Iowa 1763 men
The 16th Iowa 1441 men

The ranks have been depleted until now there are only about 1300 men living. It is expected there will be from 300 to 400 present at this reunion.

CROCKER'S IOWA BRIGADE

Closes Big Reunion Thursday Night. Everyone Pleased With Meeting.

The fiftieth anniversary of the enlistment of the members of Crocker's Iowa Brigade closed its meeting last Thursday night. We believe that these veterans of the civil war had a good time and it is certain that the meetings held were very interesting. If they were as interesting to the members as they were to those of us who know of the hardships of war only by hearsay they were interesting indeed.
When it was announced that this meeting would be held here many of us wondered if Sigourney was large enough to take care of these men. We believe that Sigourney arose to the occasion and numerous members told us that the smaller towns were the best for their meetings. Here they had the opportunity of seeing each other while in the larger places they would be lost. They prefer the smaller places they said.
The rain Wednesday afternoon and evening kept them from meeting in the tent Wednesday night but the Methodist church was turned over to them and a very good meeting held there. The address of welcome was made by the Mayor who did justice to the occasion and the address of Hon. Fred E. White was one of the very best speeches of his life. We will let the readers of the Review have the pleasure of reading that address which will be found on the page three of this issue.
Governor Carroll was present Wednesday evening and gave a good address. The entire program that evening was exceptionally good.
Thursday morning there was a parade given by the old soldiers, about 200 of them being in line. A few who were unable to walk the distance were in automobiles.
On the east side of the square Supt. Miller and the teachers of the schools had all the school pupils massed and under the leadership of Mrs. Minteer they sang patriotic songs while the veterans passed by in line of march. When the parade had passed the school children Governor Carroll mounted a chair and spoke to the school folks. He complimented the schools and Supt. Miller upon the splendid reputation of our schools and also said that he had seen larger court houses in Iowa but had seen no better ones.
Thursday evening the meeting was held in the big tent and a good program was given. There was good music at all the programs and good talks given that were not on the printed program.
At 10:30 Wednesday morning the first business meeting of the Brigade was held in the tent, President H.H. Rood of Mount Vernon, presiding.
Before taking up the regular form of business Pres. Rood spoke of the death of Mrs. Alice Cheek, the "Daughter of the Brigade," at Des Moines last November, and of the love and respect in which she was held, not only by the members of the Brigade, but by people throughout the state whom she had charmed and helped by her beautiful voice. As a small girl Mrs. Creek sang for the Brigade at Keokuk in 1861, when they were on their way to the front. She attended the reunion of the Brigade and willingly sang whenever called upon, and this was the first reunion where her voice was not heard. A committee was appointed to draft suitable resolutions on the death of Mrs. Cheek, which were unanimously adopted.
Following the parade Thursday morning the Brigade marched to the court room, where a business meeting was held. The following officers were re-elected:
President, Col. H.H. Rood, Mount Vernon; Recording Secretary and Treasurer, C.W. Kepler, Mount Vernon; Corresponding Secretary, D.W. Bushnell, Council Bluffs.
In expressing his thanks for the honor again conferred upon him, Pres. Rood spoke feelingly, and said that in so far as he had been able so to do, he had carried out every pledge made the Brigade twenty years ago when first elected to the position he now holds to succeed the late General Belknap.
It was decided to hold the next biennial reunion at Clarinda, and D. E. Vories of Marion, Iowa, was chosen as orator. Mr. Vories was here Wednesday and talked for a few moments at the business meeting and many regrets were expressed that he was unable to remain until the close of the reunion.
The following resolutions were unanimously adopted by the Brigade in the business meeting following the march on Thursday morning:
The committee on thanks and acknowledgments respectively submit the following:
First: That the thanks of the Brigade are due and hereby extended to the good people od Sigourney for their most kind, patriotic and generous welcome to their fair city.
Second: That the thanks of the Brigade are due to all who have so nicely and pleasantly entertained us by their excellent songs and music, and especially we want to thank Master Samuel Dawson, who so nicely entertained us Wednesday evening at the camp fire.
Third: Again do we want to thank Capt. J.T. Parker of Co. D. 13th Iowa, and members of the local post of the G.A. R. the Ladies of the Relief Corp. and all members of Co. D. 13th Iowa, for unnumbered kindness in making this our Golden Anniversary of 1861, the grand success it has been.
Fourth: Resolved, that the thanks of the survivors of the Old Brigade are hereby given to the children and teachers of the public schools od Sigourney, who on this morning, were massed on the east side of the court hose and sang so beautifully the old songs of 61' to 65'.
Signed: M.G. Wiggins, 11th Iowa
S. Easterly, 13th Iowa
J.H. Smith , 16th Iowa
L.S. Tyler, 15th Iowa
Chairman.

COMPANY D, 13TH IOWA
During the semi-centennial reunion of Crocker's Iowa Brigade, Capt. Parker had in line on the south side of the square Company D, 13th Iowa. The company was in line just where it lined up fifty years ago 100 men strong, and climbing into old lumber wagons, bid good-by to Sigourney and left for Dixie. Sergeant Brunt called the original roll and the roll of recruits, and Capt. Parker answered to the names of all who were not present, giving the time and place of those killed in battle and those who died in prison and hospitals, and those who have died since their discharge at the close of the war, also the residences of those still living.
The company had eighty recruits during the war and Capt. Parker has kept in close touch with every member of Company D since the discharge of the company in 1865. There were 22 of Company D in line. Three of the 22 were recruits.
