The two independent companies were the Sioux City Volunteer Cavalry Company
which was organized by authority of the Governor and mustered into Federal
service Nov. 14, 1861 It was transferred to the 7th Iowa Cav, Co. I July
25, 1863 No Historical record exists of the Company prior to the transfer
to the 7th. It was formed to protect the outlying settlements from
marauding Indians when the Army sent the regular troops to fight the South.
The 7th was formed for the same reason and all their service was on the frontier.
The other company was the Iowa Cavalry company, which was assigned to the
State of Pa. and became Co. A 11th Pa. Cavalry. It was formed at Ft. Dodge,
Ia. in Aug. 1861
The officers and men of this company were all Iowa men
