Dear Companion:

I take my pen in hand to share with you that I am well at present and I hope that when these few lines come to you they will find you and the children well and hardy. I send every _______- to write to this morning and to let you know that we wont see you until our time is out and it may be that __________ (the rest is not readable)

Here are a few verses of poetry that a friend of ours in company E of our regiment made up from the many battles that we have been in since we came out and I think you will find them to be very true.
