BATTLE OF CHAMPION HILL

By T. Anderson, Co.E. 22nd Iowa

‘Twas at the battle of Champion Hill,

and near a creek called Baker’s.

That we did show the Rebs our skill,

And that we were not Quakers.

Our General, Hovey, led the van,

Upon that well fought day;

And he it was that laid the plan,

Which drove the Rebs away.

He took the position on the right,

Where Rebs had massed their force,

Which proved the hottest of the fight.

But we whipped them of course.

Now General Carr was the reserve,

And it was quite amusing

To see the Rebs strain every nerve,

‘Till they got in confusion.

They run a battery on the hill,

And used it there quite free;

But of this soon they got their fill.

And ranaway, you see.

We charged and took this battery,,

And used it to their sorrow:

Nor did it speak in flattery,

For their escape was narrow.

Now Osterhaus and his brave boys

Here had the left in charge,

And how they changed all the Rebs joys,

When they thought to run at large.

For they poured in a heavy shower

Of grape and cannon balls;

And brought in prisoners every hour,

And made some splendid hauls.

But finally they left the field,

By them so hard contested,

When we marched from the battle field,

About five miles, then rested.

And now my story is done,

You know the reason why;

I’ve told you of the fight and fun,

So soldiers, all good bye.
