26th Iowa Infantry - Enoch Churchill

Enoch Churchill was born near Bristol, Gloustivshire, England on June 10,
1830. His father John Churchill and his mother Mary Henley Churchill were
born near the same place. He had two brothers, Stephen and Samuel and
three sisters. The two eldest dying in infancy and the youngest Sarah
lived to be twenty years of age. His childhood days and youth were spent
near his place of birth, part of the time spent in farming and gardening,
some time being spent in the factory. At the age of twenty-one he started
for America, sailing from Bristol to New York April 2, 1852 landing in New
York May 8, 1852 this spending five weeks aboard the sailing vessel. He
then went as an apprentice in a carpenters shop in New York City. The
car[enters name from whom he learned his trade was Benjamin Skoonmaker.
After three years spent there he worked one year at journey work in the
same city. He then moved to Clinton, Iowa late in the fall of 1856. Here
he was employed at his trade. On May 1, 1860 he was united in marriage to
Susan P. William's at Dewitt Iowa. In August 1962 he enlisted in company C
26 Iowa Infantry and served to the end of the war
    He enlisted in Clinton on August of 1862 leaving Clinton October 10, 1862
for Hileasa, Arkansas. Went from there to Hainis Bluff, the rear of
Vicksburg. Returned there again up the mouth of the Arkansas river to
Arkansas Post; fought in that battle; there returned to Young's Pt. from
there to Grand Gulf crossed the Miss. River there. From that place to
Jackson, Miss. returned to the rear of Vicksburg. Then returned to Jackson
a second time. From there to Black river for a rest. Then started up the
Miss. river for Memphis. From Memphis across the country to Chattanooga;
after the battle of Look Out Mountain he went to Woodville Alabama for
winter quarters serving as a guard for a private family while there. The
following spring in April was taken sick with congestin, chills,, got a
furlough, went home and stayed until October . Then returned to the army
. Joining his company at Marietta, Georgia. Went with Sherman to the sea,
then round to Washington and was mustered out at Washington and being
with Sherman at the Grand Review (May 24, 1865).
    Returning home he followed his trade until 1880 when he moved to Ida Co.
Iowa and took up farming as an occupation.
