Letters of James I. Fulton Company "B" 19th Iowa Infantry
(  Letters were Written August 1862 to discharge in July 1865 )

 

      Springfield Mo Sep the 28th 1862
 
Dear Brother & Sister & Olley
                          I take  My pen in Hand To AnSwer you letter Witch Came to had to day  I Was glad To heare From you & To here that you Was Well  I am Well fat Stout & harty and hope that this Will finde you the Same  Wee Are Camped Now a bout a half mile from the citty of Springfield  Wee have Bin here a bout Wone Week  We marcht here from Rola in 7 dayeS a diStant of 125 miles  We all felt tard When Wee got there Butt Now Wee have got a chance To rest & While I ExSpect that Wee Will Stay here for Some time yet  But I cant tell for Serten how long  this is a vary pirty place and I like To Stay here vary Well  There is 30 thouSand TroopS here Now and Still More A Coming in Evry day
 
Wee dont have mutch To do here Now But I dont know how long it Will Bee bee fore Wee have plenty To do  Wee hav Never binn in any fight yer  But Wee are Reddy any time to give them dirnd RebbelS a trial  i think Wee Can Whip them Evry pop dont you think So To = Wee Was Formed in To a Briggade at Rola Mo  the Briggade iS CompoSed of Sevin Difernt RegimentS th 19th & 20th Iowa & the 99th & 94th Ill and the 20th WiSconSin Infentry  three Reg of Caverley the firSt & third Iowa & the 4th Mo Cavelery & three BateryS of Artilery = Our Commander iS Brigadeer General Herdan  the NewS  haS juSt Come that he haS got Command of this poSt if tht iS the CaSe i ExSpect that Wee Will Stay here Some time yet  I hope it iS So for i like To Stay here Better then any place that i hav binn  Wee hav good Spring Watter & plenty of It and lotS of good frut of all kindS & vary Cheap  Wee hav plenty To Eat  A good deal more then i thought the SolgerS got from the talk i herd
Bee fore i Enlisted  in fackt Wee have more than wee Can uSe  iWould bee Satefide With Wone half i gett and live fat all A time
 
there iS 3 or 4 hundred Waggons loded With proviShSion ComeS in here Evry Week To this poSt& all Wee hav got to do iS To Cook it & Eat it and Drill twice a day  2 hourS in the forenoon And Too in the afternoon and go on dreSS preade at 6 O Clock in the Eavening  there iS five vary larg fortS here Each ContainS 20 achorS of llland in Side of them & plent of artilery from 200 pounderS down to 5 pounderS  Now I Will tell you Something a bout the Citty  it iS a place a bout the Size of Fairfield  there iS fore vary Nice ChurSch in this town Butt they waS fracturd A great deal in time of the battle here laSt Spring a yeare goo and there Was Severl vary Nice houSiS Burnd
