13th Iowa Infantry
Company "B"
According to official U.S. Army records, my great-great grandfather, Pvt Daniel Edward Lanphier, was mustered into Company B, 13th Iowa Infantry, on 17 Oct 1861 at Davenport, Iowa. On 5 July 1864, he was wounded at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, and subsequently evacuated back to Davenport to receive medical care. U.S. Army records indicate he was present at the following battles while assigned to Company B, 13th Iowa Infantry: Shiloh, Siege of Corinth, Siege of Vicksburg, and Battles for Atlanta. Further, his obituary, taken from an unknown Jasper County, Iowa, newspaper indicates my great-great grandfather died on 22 Oct 1921 at Mt Zion, Iowa. According to his obituary, he was the "next to the last man in his company." Further, the "lone survivor of Company B is Beriah Battles of Mitchellville." He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Garrett Post #16, Newton, Iowa, until his death.
