For Sabine, in Texas, it seems we are bound

As that is the next important post found.

And when we get there Ill venture to say,

That it will be ours before we come away.

For we are the Vicksburg troops, tried under fire,

Not those who read papers, and never go higher.

Vicksburg was thought all secure and complete

With cannon enough to sink any fleet.

But when twas thought proper to run the blockade

Then boats were brought down, and arrangements were made;

But most of the boats were lacking a crew,

So they called on the soldiers to pilot them through.

When plenty came forward, all ready to go,

And thought it an honor to get to do so,

So all being ready, they started with speed,

And to the loud cannons they did not give heed.

With banners all flying in splendor and pride,

While the old Ironsides kept close by their side;

And once and a while, with all their side guns,

They gave them a volley, as by them they run.

So Vicksburg was conquered by a force in the rear,

Which came past their batteries which they held so dear.

And so, through the Lord, I now think well be blest,

To find out a way to conquer the rest.

Now, I think the time, is not far ahead,

When copperhead traitors had better be dead.

Because we wont allow our old flag disgraced

By those it protected, though theyre of our race;

So I will just say to all copperheads, learn

To keep your mouths shut before the soldiers return;

For I feel quite certain that if they do not

To suffer for treason will fall to their lot.

"For this is the way were determined to take

The venom and poison from this nasty snake;

But now, for the present, well let them alone;

So three rousing cheers for William M. Stone!"
