31st Iowa Infantry

Monument located in the Vicksburg National Military Cemetery beyond the "gazebo". Also a marker designating the assaults of 22 May 1863, located slope between Confederate Avenue & Park Tour Stop #6, and a marker designating a sharpshooter's line located in the Vicksburg National Military Cemetery beyond the "gazebo". This unit was attached to Col. Charles R. Woods' 2nd Brigade of Maj. Gen.. Frederick Steele & Brig. Gen. John M. Thayer's 1st Division, of Maj. Gen'ls William T. Sherman & Frederick Steele's XV Army Corps and was commanded by Col. William Smyth & Maj. Theodore Stimming.
