Iowa During the Civil War
Excerpts from my Great Grandfather Valentine L. Spawr's Civil War Diary
Company C, 14th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment
This is the first installment, for your reading pleasure, of the contents of my great-grandfather's diary kept between June 28 and September 15, 1863, while he was located at a Union outpost near Columbus, Kentucky. He was a member of Co C, 14th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment, having enlisted as a private; at the time this diary was written, he was still a private soldier, although he finished the war as company First Sergeant. Although he died in 1882 of a lung disease he contracted in the Civil War, and which he refers to in this diary, the diary wasn't published until 1892. It is not known if there are other parts of the diary which were kept or published. At present, this is all I have.
Valentine L. Spawr
Born 1835, Died 1882.
